Meet Michelle: Co-Founder, Maker, Doer

We want to share with you a little about who we are and how Leather By Dragonfly came to be. First up, meet Michelle Melchior, who has been selling her custom work since she was 12. She's creative in the kitchen, sensational with a sewing machine and terrific with all sorts of tools thanks to her parents. You’ll see Michelle in some of our videos on our website, on our YouTube channel and especially on our Instagram page, where you’ll find her modeling our products and updating our work order whiteboard.

Michelle says:

“With Leather By Dragonfly, I love getting to be creative every day. We make something that meets a need and is so beautiful, I am proud to put our name on it.”

I was born into a family of doers and makers. My father was a millwright who could fix anything. My mother was an entrepreneur and a successful businesswoman.

Tools were all around me as I grew up. I learned about welding, mechanics, electrical work, plumbing, sewing, cake decorating, hair styling and flower arranging. The ability to make anything custom was right at my fingertips.

I am grateful to my parents for their support and the talents they cultivated in me.

In seventh and eighth grade, I had 10 classes each in cake decorating, sewing and upholstery. I made my senior prom dress and, later, our daughter's prom dress.

When I was 12, I started selling cakes that I decorated. At 14, I sold my first wedding cake. Making the wedding cakes for our children is on my bucket list. One down (this summer) and one to go (next July)!

I have a license in cosmetology, and I had a business reupholstering furniture.

With Leather By Dragonfly, I love getting to be creative every day. We make something that meets a need and is so beautiful, I am proud to put our name on it.
